I have polished aluminum rims and don't have enough umph to get all the crude off of them.?

i bought them with new tires on for $550.00 not bad being they are classic cuddington rims but they weren't properly taken care of and i can't seem to scrub hard enough to get all the nasty stuff off. what can i use? or am i better off getting them done by a pro?
